Bastion Dendermonde

description

At the Bastion in Dendermonde, a historic site once part of the city’s defensive fortifications, a new timber-frame building was constructed as part of a sustainable redevelopment project. The focus of the project is ecological construction, heritage conservation and biodiversity. The works were carried out by Woema, a contractor specialising in circular and bio-based building methods.

For the floor construction, a lime-based screed using RC Calcifix was applied by Manforce Oostende, a certified specialist in lime and renovation screeds. RC Calcifix is a natural hydraulic lime (NHL) screed that provides a breathable, mineral floor system ideally suited for timber-frame buildings and renovation projects where moisture regulation is crucial. The mortar was mixed on site with locally sourced sand, resulting in a naturally light-coloured screed — an aesthetic improvement compared to standard cement screeds. Its high vapour permeability and cement-free composition ensure full compatibility with breathable and ecological construction systems. RC Calcifix helps create a healthy indoor environment while offering a durable and reversible building solution.
