description

In Anzegem, the former St John’s Church is being given an exceptional new purpose where heritage, nature and community life come together. Following the devastating fire that severely damaged the church in 2014, the tower, sacristy and chancel were carefully rebuilt and transformed into a new liturgical space. The fire-damaged nave was preserved as a ruin and gradually evolved into a unique green environment. Commissioned by the Municipality of Anzegem, NU Architectuuratelier developed a forward-looking design that respects the historic significance of the site while creating new opportunities for community interaction and public enjoyment. The restoration and façade works were carried out by the skilled craftsmen of A. Vandendorpe.

For the restoration of the historic masonry and pointing, Saint-Astier NHL 3.5 natural hydraulic lime was selected, a material perfectly suited to the original building fabric and traditional conservation techniques. Thanks to its excellent vapour permeability, flexibility and long-term durability, this lime mortar enables the existing walls, arches and columns to be consolidated and preserved in a respectful manner. The use of natural lime therefore contributes to the sustainable restoration of this valuable heritage site, allowing the church ruin to evolve into a green gathering place and a new landmark in the heart of Anzegem.
